According to a recent Black Book report, many providers have outsourced EHR, RCM and coding vendors. Of those providers, 22% said that they outsourced these tasks and did not take any other measure to adjust for potential negative effects on revenue cycles after Oct. 1. "Top vendors have the financial stability and commitment to innovation, which means helping improve clinical care and business, not just inserting codes," said Doug Brown, Black Book managing partner, which will improve clinical documentation and determine medical necessity especially as it affects revenue flow.
The report evaluated 91 vendors on 18 key performance indicators across 4 functional areas of coding outsourcing. The top ranked vendors for 2015 were Optum360, Health Information Resource Group, M*Modal, and Nuance. Optum360 offers hospital computer assisted coding (CAC), medical records and HIM outsourcing while Health Information Resource Group offers physician practice CAC and HIM Outsourcing. M*Modal provides transcription outsourcing and Nuance offers clinical documentation improvement. Outsourcing to these vendors is a highly attractive solution for providers that are trying to avoid delays during the ICD-10 transition.
